- Formal wine certification essential
- In-depth understanding of wine regions, grape varietals, and production methods
- Ability to accurately assess wines, including flavour profiles, aromas, acidity and tannins
- Expertise in pairing wine with food to enhance both the dining and drinking experience
- At least 2 years’ experience working in high-end restaurants with extensive wine lists essential
- Hands-on experience with wine service, including opening bottles, decanting, and serving wine at the correct temperature and with the appropriate glassware
- Experience with customer service, recommending wines based on customers’ preferences and the menu
- Ability to explain wine concepts clearly and provide recommendations in a way that is approachable for customers.
- Knowledge of the wine list and the ability to suggest wines that may enhance the guests’ dining experience while increasing revenue
- Meticulous in keeping track of inventory, updating wine lists and serving wine professionally
- Genuine enthusiasm for wine and continuous learning, keeping up with trends, new wines and vintages
- Ability to manage the wine inventory, including ordering, receiving, and ensuring the proper storage of wines
- Work with the chef and management to design or update the wine list, ensuring a balances selection of wines that compliment the menu
- Must be able to lift wine cases
- Must have the ability to work long shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays
- Extensive time on feet during service hours
- Must be friendly, approachable, and capable of creating a comfortable dining experience for guests
- Must have the ability to handle different types of customers, from novice to wine aficionados
- Maintain a polished and professional appearance
