Job description: Job SummaryResponsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive legal support to the business unit, ensuring timely, sound legal advice aligned with the company’s strategy and risk appetite.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of business unit products, channels, and features.
- Produce written legal opinions, undertake research, and stay updated on legislative developments.
- Maintain collegial relations with the Legal Department and keep the Legal Manager informed of key developments.
Legal Expertise:
- Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
- Draft, review, and interpret legal documents, contracts, and policies.
- Provide advice on compliance with local and international laws and support the design of compliant products.
Contract and Risk Management:
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, service contracts, and vendor agreements.
- Proactively manage legal risks, identify gaps, and develop mitigation strategies.
- Support in preparing reports on legal risks, litigation, and agreements for senior management.
Dispute Resolution:
- Advise on litigation strategy, liaise with external counsel, and represent the company in legal proceedings.
Coaching and Support:
- Provide legal advice and training to internal departments.
Stakeholder Management:
- Advise management on rights and obligations in business transactions and support risk control measures.
- Coach and develop team members and share legislative updates.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and admission as an attorney or advocate in South Africa.
- 5-7 years of post-admission legal experience, ideally in the credit, banking, or financial services industry.
- Proficiency in MS Office and legal research tools
- Experience in insurance law, litigation, and regulatory compliance is preferred.
